Traumatic pasts in Canadian Aboriginal people : further support for a complex trauma conceptualization? by Ingrid Söchting ; Raymond Corrado ; Irwin M. Cohen ; Robert G. Ley ; Charles BrasfieldABSTRACT: A relevant and helpful framework for assessing Aboriginal people with a traumatic past may include complex posttraumatic stress disorder or disorder of extreme stress not otherwise specified. In a study for the Aboriginal Healing Foundation, 127 case files were obtained from former students of Indian residential schools in British Columbia. A coding system was developed to systematically analyze a number of psychosocial and mental health problems. The Aboriginal people studied were found to have several risk factors for complex posttraumatic stress disorder and many mental health problems associated with complex trauma. These findings suggest that it may be useful to adapt a complex posttraumatic stress disorder framework when assessing mental health problems in Canadian Aboriginal people. The findings also suggest that further research is needed to offer more definite conclusions about the associations between residential school experiences and mental health problems.

Disrupted attachment : a social context complex trauma framework and the lives of Aboriginal peoples in Canada by Dr. Lori Haskell ; Dr. Melanie RandallIntroduction: The idea of “disrupted attachments” speaks to both levels on which the historic and contemporary assaults on Aboriginal peoples in Canada have resonated. Not only have the policies of colonialism expressly aimed to sever the attachment of Canada's First Nations to their land, customs, culture, modes of self-governance, languages, and ways of life, but the traumatic impact of these disrupted attachments have reverberated through both the communities and through the individual lives of Aboriginal peoples in this country. The relatively new and more expansive conceptualization of “complex trauma” in the mental health field has, as one of its core and defining features, alterations (better expressed as harms) in relationships with one's sense of self, as well as alterations (more aptly described as harms) to relationships with others. These harms to relationships can be usefully conceptualized as “disrupted attachments.” In this way then, the idea of“disrupted attachment” eloquently speaks to the myriad and fundamental ways in which the individuals and the communities comprising the Aboriginal peoples in Canada have been traumatized.
Trauma and Recovery by Judith Lewis HermanIn this groundbreaking book, a leading clinical psychiatrist redefines how we think about and treat victims of trauma. A "stunning achievement" that remains a "classic for our generation." (Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., author of The Body Keeps the Score). Trauma and Recovery is revered as the seminal text on understanding trauma survivors. By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparable from its social and political context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war. Hailed by the New York Times as "one of the most important psychiatry works to be published since Freud," Trauma and Recovery is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand how we heal and are healed.

Living with a Black Dog by Matthew JohnstoneOne in four women and one in six men will suffer from depression at least once in their life. Few are immune. It was the greatly admired Winston Churchill, a depression sufferer for much of his life, who nicknamed this human condition "Black Dog." Living with a Black Dog is perhaps the most useful book ever created about depression. In simple text and strongly supportive illustrations, this slim volume examines, explains, and demystifies one of the most widespread and debilitating problems afflicting modern society. Whether you've struggled with your own Black Dog for years, wondered why you're feeling sort of "ruff" lately, or known someone shadowed by a dark canine, Living with a Black Dog is for you. Artist and writer Matthew Johnstone, a depression sufferer himself, delivers a moving and uplifting insight into life with this unsavory companion. Even better, the book shows the strength and support to be found within and around us to tame this shaggy beast and ultimately bring it to heel. Johnstone's book doesn't pretend to have all the answers. It doesn't resort to simple "dog tricks" for dealing with depression. But Living with a Black Dog does deliver understanding, hope, and the assurance that Black Dog days are not forever.

Broken Circle by Theodore FontaineNow an approved curriculum resource for grade 9-12 students in British Columbia and Manitoba. Theodore (Ted) Fontaine lost his family and freedom just after his seventh birthday, when his parents were forced to leave him at an Indian residential school by order of the Roman Catholic Church and the Government of Canada. Twelve years later, he left school frozen at the emotional age of seven. He was confused, angry and conflicted, on a path of self-destruction. At age 29, he emerged from this blackness. By age 32, he had graduated from the Civil Engineering Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and begun a journey of self-exploration and healing. In this powerful and poignant memoir, Ted examines the impact of his psychological, emotional and sexual abuse, the loss of his language and culture, and, most important, the loss of his family and community. He goes beyond details of the abuses of Native children to relate a unique understanding of why most residential school survivors have post-traumatic stress disorders and why succeeding generations of First Nations children suffer from this dark chapter in history. Told as remembrances described with insights that have evolved through his healing, his story resonates with his resolve to help himself and other residential school survivors and to share his enduring belief that one can pick up the shattered pieces and use them for good.

Body Remembers by Babette RothschildFor both clinicians and their clients there is tremendous value inunderstanding the psychophysiology of trauma and knowing what to doabout its manifestations. This book illuminates that physiology, shining a bright light on the impact of trauma on the body and the phenomenon of somatic memory. It is now thought that people who have been traumatized hold an implicit memory of traumatic events in their brains and bodies. That memory is often expressed in the symptomatology of posttraumatic stress disorder-nightmares, flashbacks, startle responses, and dissociative behaviors. In essence, the body of the traumatized individual refuses to be ignored. While reducing the chasm between scientific theory and clinical practice and bridging the gap between talk therapy and body therapy, Rothschild presents principles and non-touch techniques for giving the body its due. With an eye to its relevance for clinicians, she consolidates current knowledge about the psychobiology of the stress response both in normally challenging situations and during extreme and prolonged trauma. This gives clinicians from all disciplines a foundation for speculating about the origins of their clients' symptoms and incorporating regard for the body into their practice. The somatic techniques are chosen with an eye to making trauma therapy safer while increasing mind-body integration. Packed with engaging case studies, The Body Remembers integrates body and mind in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. It will appeal to clinicians, researchers, students, and general readers.

Indigenous Cultures and Mental Health Counselling by Roy Moodley (Editor); Ashley Hyatt (Editor); Suzanne L. Stewart (Editor)North America's Indigenous population is a vulnerable group, with specific psychological and healing needs that are not widely met in the mental health care system. Indigenous peoples face certain historical, cultural-linguistic and socioeconomic barriers to mental health care access that government, health care organizations and social agencies must work to overcome. It considers Indigenous epistemologies in applied psychology and research methodology, and informs government policy on mental health service for these populations.

Lighting the seventh fire : the spiritual ways, healing, and science of the Native American by F. David Peat; Kensington Publishing Corporation Staff"Dr. F. David Peat, a theoretical physicist, spent much of his life trying to understand the universe through the means of western science. Then, in the 1980s, he began a series of encounters with Native Americans that gave him a profoundly different perception of reality - from their view of the creation of the world and birth itself to death and beyond." "Often moving and always enlightening, Lighting the Seventh Fire describes a stress-free and inspiring way of life so very different from the harsh, complex world in which we live." "Dr. Peat addresses such topics as: Healing and Disease, Science, Mathematics, History and Myth, Language, and Time. Everything is viewed in a different fashion from the way we see things. For example, physical healing can often be achieved through song, which Native Americans believe lives on long after the singer dies." "In Ceremonies of Renewal, everything from the movement of the sun to the stability of society is in a state of flux. It is through negotiating compacts with the energies of the universe and carrying out periodic ceremonies of renewal that stability and balance can be ensured." "Thus, the People of the Plains meet each year to celebrate the Sun Dance, which is performed for many days around the sacred cottonwood tree. They claim this ceremony plays its role in maintaining the harmony and balance of the cosmos. For the author, the Sun Dance became his introduction to the world of Native American science." "In sacred mathematics, numbers are not abstract, static things, but living entities that transform one into the other. And history is not written down but passed on by storytellers who recount events of past generations, including migrations that took place before time as humans experienced it." "The title Lighting the Seventh Fire prophesizes that when the seventh fire is lit, the Native American and the white man will become brothers. It bridges the world views of Blackfeet, Iroquois, Haida, Hopi, Ojibwaj, and Mayan peoples and our own scientific account of reality. It reveals a world in which time moves in a circle, rocks speak, animals transform, and songs bring about healing."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
