Michael McLeod was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories on December 6th, 1999 as the Member for Deh Cho in the 14th Legislative Assembly. He was elected again to the 15th Legislative Assembly in 2003, and acclaimed as the Member for Deh Cho in the 16th Assembly.
During the 15th Legislative Assembly, Mr. McLeod served as the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Minister responsible for Youth. Mr. McLeod also served as the Minister of Transportation, Minister responsible for the Housing Corporation, and the Minister responsible for the Public Utilities Board.
Mr. McLeod is a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for his contributions toward Community Development.
Born in Fort Providence on September 6th, 1959, Mr. McLeod served as the mayor of the Deh Cho hamlet, prior to being elected to the Assembly, and is a former president of Métis Local #57 in Fort Providence.
Mr. McLeod worked as the band manager for the Deh Gah Gotine Dene Council, and as an Economic Development Officer for the Government of the Northwest Territories. He has a diploma in Management Studies from Arctic College and began his career as a self-employed contractor. This experience provided him with an understanding of the needs of small business owners and their families. He has also been a member of Northwest Territories Tourism, NWT Public Utilities, and Mackenzie Valley Environment Impact Review Boards. The latter’s mission, conducting fair and timely environmental assessments remains a key interest.
Mr. McLeod is an active community volunteer with the Mackenzie Daze Celebration in Fort Providence and the New Years’ Eve First Night celebration, promoting sobriety. He is an honourary lifetime member of the Zhahti Koe community Friendship Centre and is a founding member of Digaa Enterprises Limited, a local economic development corporation, a founding member of the Deh Cho Regional Council, now known as the Deh Cho First Nation Tribal Council, and a founding member of the Fort Providence Resource Management Board.
Mr. McLeod is active in his community and has served as a Master Corporal in the Canadian Junior Rangers and enjoys spending his free time outdoors hunting and fishing. He and his wife Joyce have one son, Kevin, and two daughters, Robyn and Shawna.
